Include profiling enabled libraries or easy way to enable profiling

Reported by: ozten Owned by: gregorycollins
Priority: major Milestone:
Component: Platform Keywords:
Cc: ozten

Description

As a newbie to Haskell, I love the Haskell Platform! One of the first things I wanted to do was profile, to understand runtime behaviors better. I found that I couldn't compile my app with profiling information because a regexp library I imported wasn't compiled with profile info.

Expected: Haskell Platform includes profile info or has a documented way to enable profiling for all libraries

Actual: I downloaded ghc and cabal for profiling

I just got bitten by this on OS X via the binary install of the haskell-platform package, because mtl isn't shipped with profiling.

The unix tarball ships with profiling, but we might want to mandate it for all distros.

We should mandate it for all distros, and this is fixed as of the upcoming osx installer release. Should we close the ticket?

Ruling: profiling should be enabled for all distros.
