Errors in derived read instances should be caught to give a more useful error message. I encountered this when using the (hopefully soon deprecated) LANGUAGE pragma NoMonoPatBinds?. 

'Prelude.read: no parse'

I've stopped using read altogether, in favor of readsPrec, so now there should be no more balking on unrecognised extensions. Case closed.
