And try to compile recursive, it certainly builds, but it almost immediately starts using up 900mb+ of memory and continues to gobble more until you kill it.

We need to see exactly why this is; currently, if you have the Boehm GC installed, you can compile it with '-fboehm' and it doesn't use up 900mb, but it doesn't finish, either.
