While gnome-terminal (and I expect many other terms) don't readily expose it, they have support for 256 colors when the terminal is set correctly: export TERM=xterm-256color
With this, Vim, etc. can use full-color themes without problems. Yi should be able to take advantage of this, as well, via vty support. Presently, Yi themes that don't use the standard colors appear as a mix of white and light gray on my machine.
